Quick Marginal Gains – Number 3

This is an idea from David Lomer which I now use routinely.

When I return a test or homework, I want students to annotate it, not only with corrections but with new targets. The work will have been done in black pen and/or pencil and my marking and comments will be in red.

I tell students to get another colour out.  I first give them 5 minutes to look at their mistakes and correct them themselves in blue without help from me. I then go over the answers, and they correct and add targets (“learn this!”, “practice these types of q”, “go to subject support” etc) in blue. They then have a document that they can use for revision, with the “story” clear.
